Sun Peaks Resort Tabletop Exercise: Summer Wildfire in a Resort Town

In June 2024, Ally teamed up with Sun Peaks Resort to conduct a Tabletop Exercise (TTX) to prepare for potential wildfires, including possible evacuations. The exercise was well attended with participants from Sun Peaks Resort, the Mountain Resort Municipality, Tourism Sun Peaks, Neskonlith Indian Band, RCMP, Thompson-Nicola Regional District, BC Wildfire Service, Kamloops Fire Rescue, and the City of Kamloops.

In addition to validating the existing Emergency Response Plan (ERP), exercise objectives included an improved understanding of jurisdictional boundaries and decision-making authority. This is a critical aspect of good preparedness in situations where overlapping jurisdictional responsibilities can muddy waters in times when clarity is of the essence.

Several iterations of a wildfire starting within municipality boundaries were explored, with participants first receiving a notional briefing on current weather conditions, and the BC wildfire season to date. Groups were then formed based on their potential real-life roles, fostering detailed, role-specific discussions.

To conclude the TTX, participants and facilitators worked together to identify the most pertinent issues brought to light that day. This provides focus for future planning and highlights response gaps that need to be addressed. Ally applauds Sun Peaks Resort for their proactive approach in organizing and executing this vital exercise. We look forward to developing more exercises with this team as they strive to maintain continual readiness for the scope and scale of wildfire threats in BC.
